I think my Italian heritage doesn't really allow me to comment on Olive Garden. But I have to take this disdain a little farther since I like McDonald's fries so much [I'm with you, l'oiseau!] and there is nothing, nothing, I tell you that I like about Olive Garden.
I worked at the OG for 2 years... and now have been 5 years at another italian-american restaurant. The OG has a cult following... and I have to admit... I got addicted to their salad and eggplant parmesan. Of course I always modified it because I worked there. It is the McDonalds of Italian, but as you say, sometimes you really crave the fries, and nothing else will suffice.

Actually McDonald's fries are pretty good.
I don't think Chick-fil-A has quite the name recognition, though. Maybe the Taco Bell of Italian food...
